You might read a movie review, someone’s thoughts on current events, a rant about homework, a thoughtful poem, or something of those sorts.

Do you want to ask a question to the author of a submitted article?

You can!

Email a question or response (be mindful your parents and/or wraparound team will
be notified if comments are inappropriate) to hillsideswraparound@gmail.com
to publish thoughts on a newsletter submission or make your own submission. Articles submitted will be labeled to the author’s first name, last initial, and hometown.

Video Game Review by... Michael A. La Verne, CA

PokƩmon Soul Silver and Heart Gold Version
PokƩmon Soul Silver and Heart Gold version are my most favorite PokƩmon games. They have all the Hoen and Kanto, plus the Johnto region PokƩmon in them. You can trade PokƩmon between the two games worldwide and local. My favorite Kanto region PokƩmon is Charizard, my favorite Hoen region PokƩmon is Blaziken, my favorite Johnto region PokƩmon is Typhlosion. My favorite legendary PokƩmon are Entei, Lugia, Zaptos, Mewto, and Groudon. You can get these two games and many more. That is why I like PokƩmon Soul Silver and Heart Gold Version the most.

Parent Partner Update with Elisa G.

I want to tell you about a very special family that we worked with for about two years. The first few times we met,  mom would not open the door or would only open it a bit and send us away. She was scared. I consistently visited her and  one day, took her to  buy groceries.  After she realized we were good people (wraparound), she got around to opening the door and allowed us to meet with her and her son. He did not let us see his face, his long beautiful hair covered it. As time went by, and they got familiar with our program and activities we did together, they started to trust us and confide in us and even looked forward for us to meet weekly. One evening I took them dinner and he allowed me to see his face I knew that we were to making progress as trust had finally  been established. I spent  a lot of time with mom. I was her friend. We ran errands together, pay bills and we formed a relationship and according to her, it was  forever. Even though the team and I  were concerned on how both would maintain their improvement after the program finished. We knew sooner or later we were to close. Resources, linking the family to activities and all that we do was in place. The boy graduated from high school and it was time to go.
We still keep in touch, and to my amazement they are doing well together and moving forward in this life with their mental illness. The family is  capable to be resourceful and continue to use skills that were facilitated by the team. Mom found a job and currently  manages the apartment building where they reside. Her son is still in a program that gives him seasonal work and has a steady girlfriend. We should be proud of our influence and work with families. This family is forever grateful and like mom tells me we are friends forever. See you next time!

Community Resource Spotlight

The Graff Lab is an urban sanctuary for artists, kids, and adults that opened after the Los Angeles public school
district cut its after-school art programs in 2006. World famous for its graffiti and aerosol art, the Graff Lab is
dedicated to providing artists with a safe space to develop their skills. At the Graff Lab artists don’t have to worry about getting harassed by the police or by gangsters; they are free to concentrate on their craft.
But the Graff Lab is more than a public art space. The Graff Lab offers free tutoring and counseling in addition to free dance and music lessons (guitar and drums). The USC Boxing Club is in the process of setting up a training facility at the Graff Lab, so free boxing lessons are on the horizon as well. Additionally, the Graff Lab hosts a variety of cultural events, including a Halloween party, a Thanksgiving get-together, a Virgin of Guadalupe celebration and a Christmas toy drive. The Graff Lab also offers historical preservation and small business training through its sister organization: the Pico-Union Housing Corporation.
The Graff Lab is located at 1038 Venice Blvd at the intersection of Union and Venice. It is just minutes from the Staples Center in downtown LA.   Excerpt taken from thegrafflab.com

Advice from our Home Girl in the 909

I am a 16 year old teenager who has done everything a 30 year old just got done doing. I don’t have all the answers but I have most of them. I’ve been knocked down lots of times but I’ve gotten up right back. I have been arrested, lived in lots of different foster homes, been Awol for months at a time, consumed almost every drug. Been kicked out of plenty of schools, been affiliated with gangs, pregnant at 13 years old. I’ve done it all. But today I’m trying to put my life back together  and I think I’m doing a pretty good job at it. If you have a question or need advice at anytime. I’ll be here to listen and try to help you out. I want to  use my life experiences to help out. ——Diamond——
