Community Resource Spotlight

Informal supports can be found in a variety of settings: Schools, local park leagues, afterschool care, even at your grocery store. In this issues’ community resource spotlight, we highlight the local Church. A great place to meet dedicated people and programs designed to help the community. Where else can you find the best community resources?

Covina Assembly of God Church | 250 E. San Bernardino Rd. | Covina, CA 91723 | (626) 966-4488
Mission statement: “Covina Assembly of God is a place for every person to experience a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and to share His Love with others. More specifically, we are a team of multi-ethnic, multi-generational congregations in the Los Angeles area focused on reaching young families of ethnic diversity in our local communities”

A few Wraparound families in the area have had the privilege of attending this church and benefiting from several of the different activities and resources this great church has to offer. Programs such as the “Champions club” a ministry focusing specifically on children with special needs and an awesome Wednesday night service for Jr. High and High school students which happens every Wednesday from 7-8:30 make this a youth friendly church. The “Five” is a service/ministry designed to reach out to young adults and young families. This service occurs at the family life center on Saturdays at 5 pm. Celebrate Recovery is a place to find freedom from your hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Based on Matthew's teaching in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12), Celebrate Recovery leads people through a 12-step recovery process. Celebrate Recovery is held every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Adult Development Center, Room 424. Childcare is available. Covina Assemblies of God also offers a financial peace group which helps those interested in taming spending habits, learning to budget, and wanting to  break away from debt. The Economic Relief Center is open Tuesday through Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. to distribute food and quality clothing, both new and previously owned. Food and clothing is available every 30 days. Our Food Bank is located at 436 N. First Avenue. Recipients must be residents of one of the following areas: Azusa, Baldwin Park, Covina, Glendora, La Puente or West Covina and must provide a valid I.D. Our Clothing Rack is located at 430 N. First Avenue.

With programs such as the Special Needs Buddy program (giving special needs youth a one on one during their kids service to help with socialization) and Divorce Care for Kids (a ministry specifically focusing on helping kids who are going through a divorce in their families) Christian Assemblies is on the forefront of providing great community resources and support for the city of Eagle Rock and it’s surrounding areas. Services for infants-2nd grade occur on Saturdays at 6pm and Sundays at 9am, 11am, and 6pm. For kids 3rd-5th grade, services happen on Saturdays at 6pm and Sundays at 9am and 11am. For Jr. high students, Christian Assemblies or CA offers a Saturday night service from 6-7:30 pm called Power Pack . Vertical Reality is a Wednesday night service from 7-8:30 for the community’s high school students. An advertised casual atmosphere, Christian Assemblies encourage attendees of the church to come as you are and of ten members are dressed in flip flops and shorts. Saturday 6 pm, Sunday at 9am, 11:15 am, and 6 pm are the typical services offered at this church. Low cost counseling ($50 for members and $75 for non-members) is available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and every other Friday. Call 323 315 0963 for more details. Specific male and female and female groups cover several topics from Men’s Fraternity to Women’s adventure group. A definite mover and shaker in the northeast Los Angeles community. Words from Us.

Are you kidding me, you want me to go to world history?
When my mental state is complete misery.
When death, drugs, and thugs surround and keep stressin’ me.
To me life itself seems worse than a modern day Shakespearean tragedy
Gang-banging yesterday, today, and tomorrow is my cruel reality.
Cousins, Aunts, Uncles, brothers, sisters and all
Gang-banging in my family goes back to when Michael Jordan
first touched a basketball.
In fact, been throwing up gang signs since I could crawl.
Yeah, I think I’m hard, big bad and tough
You mess wit me I’m crazy enough to call your bluff.
Family doesn’t really exist, but I’m not pissed cuz my gang is my team.
Foster homes, group homes, lonely, no guidance and I’m only 14.
College—yeah right. Death and the Pen seem to be my American Dreams.
Putting in work for my set is my CAHSEE,
Perfecting crime capers for paper are my SATees.
While you were learning to formulate a solid thesis,
My homie was teaching me how to move pieces.
Nevertheless, I want someone to care, I want someone to help and
Someone to show me some genuine love.
My deviant behavior and outward bravado are all phony—
Covering up my internal pain like a glove.
In need of a friend, an advocate, or even a WRAPPER to give me a hope.
Cuz, I don’t know how much longer I got to live or how much longer
I can cope?
