December 27-29th 2011 are milestone dates for our department here at Hillsides. Our vision of taking the families we serve out to do activities as a group in hopes to establish connections between clients who wouldn’t normally meet in regular circumstances was manifested. Backed by Hillsides donors found by our Development office (Thank you to Nanci Garni and her staff) we were able to invite over 60 clients to 3 different activities on 3 consecutive days. Over the span of 3 days we were able to Bowl in Pasadena’s swanky “300” lanes, shoot the lights out at Laser Island in Upland, and participate in a photo scavenger hunt along the Gold Line light rail from Pasadena to Universal City (shout out goes to Team Gabby A, Mayra G. and Catalina G. for destroying the competition 118 points! She won a Target gift card for her efforts). At the conclusion of our outings, kids and adults alike had a great time, meeting new friends, connecting with old friends, and enjoying what our great city has to offer. Thank you to all who participated, supervised, and donated. A big thank you goes to Catalina Garcia and Jorge Alvarez who organized the events.
Here at Hillsides on Wednesday two of our very own Parent Partners Rochelle Earley and Elisa Gonzalez conduct’s a parenting class that are different than the traditional parenting class that concentrate solely on behaviors. This parenting class taps into the realm of the mental health illness that is touching the many families we serve. The parenting class is geared to provide an understanding of each mental illness we cover and to provide our parent with resources to understand the illness more. The class is very open everyone is allowed to speak and is encouraged to participate. During the class many friendships are formed by the parents and stories and advice are shared. The class is held on Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30. Please contact your Parent Partner for more Info!
